Once of the biggest reasons as to why your computer runs slow has to do with your computer being setup to “look pretty”. A lot of your computers resources are being used to make the interface look good and if you were to tune these down, then your computer might be able to run a bit faster.
If you tune it down, you will get a small performance boost. This is especially true if you are a Windows Vista user (Vista has a lot of unnecessary programs that run in the back ground that are designed to just make the operating system look nice. By disabling them you will get a small performance boost). If your curious about this, here’s how to do it:
For those Windows XP users out there just click Start right click on My Computer and select Properties. Now select the Advanced tab and on the area where it says “Performance”, double click Settings. Now, in the Visual Effects tab a tthe top of the screen select Adjust For Best Performance. See, what you are now doing is forcing Windows XP to look more like Windows 98. For those of you what would like your computer to look somewhat good and still be tuned for performance just select the Custom box, make sure that all of the other boxes are selected and scroll down to the bottom. Now just select “Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons”. All you have to do now is just select Apply and then OK.

Most people will download a program and then when they realize that they don’t need it anymore they will just leave it on their computer and move on. Why is this bad? First off, that program is taking up space on your hard drive but more importantly it is most likely running in the background of your computer and using up resources that you can be using.
Just to be on the safe side, if you are not sure of what a program is or what it does, don’t remove it – your computer might actually be using it. Only remove a program if you know what it is and what it does. Here is the procedure:
If you are a Windows XP user just start by clicking Start, going to the Control Panel, clicking on the Add/Remove Programs and then waiting a little while for the list to be populated (if you have a lot of programs on your computer it will take a while for all of them to appear). Now, just remove the programs that you know you don’t need by clicking on the program and then selecting “Change/Remove”. After that you just have to go through with the process to remove it.
If you have Windows Vista, start by clicking the Start button, going to Control Panel and make sure that at the top of the window that you have “Classic View” selected. Now just double click on the Programs and Features button (it may take a few seconds for your programs to come up on the list) and just check off the programs that you don’t need and select Uninstall to remove them. Your computer operating system uses RAM as a temporary working area for files and programs but sometimes those files that are being used in RAM are going to also need a temporary working area. This new temporary working area is a folder on your hard drive called the Temp folder. When your files in your RAM are done using the Temp folder Windows will automatically delete everything in that folder. The issue happens when your computer freezes, hangs or you end a program. All of the files that were in the Temp folder are still in there and they haven’t been deleted. This may not sound like much but after time these files can add up to a lot and start to slow your computer down. Here is how you get rid of them:

Now type Run in the start menu search box. When the Run window comes up type %Temp% and hit the enter button. Now delete everything that you see in that folder. If there are some files that you cannot delete all you have to do is to just ignore them and then move onto the next one and start selecting those.
By cleaning up your Temp folder regularly you are first freeing up your computer of hard drive space which will make it run faster in the long run (it will have less files that it will have to manage) and your computer will also have less internal errors.
