It was across the meadows near the Heathcote Ferry that the steam whistle of a locomotive shrieked the first announcement of public rail traffic in New Zealand; the day was the occassion commemorated by this video:
December 1st, 1863
In October 1988 - 125 years on - we look back and celebrate the occassion with a feast of steam never seen since this form of motive power ended in Canterbury. This video presentation shows steam action from the Christchurch-Ferrymead shuttle, the evening Rangiora trips, the excursion to Timaru and the mountain special to Arthur's Pass on the the Midland Line.
Finally there's a closeup view of the Locomotive & Rolling Stock Cacalcade held at the Christchurch Railway Station.
This presentation is also narrated without spoiling the action.
